The Rise of Local AI: Running Llama 3 on Your Laptop

For a long time, using a top-tier LLM meant sending your data to OpenAI's servers. But with the release of Meta's Llama 3 and tools like Ollama, the paradigm is shifting. You can now run GPT-3.5 level intelligence on your own MacBook.

Why Run Local?

  1. Privacy: Your data never leaves your device. This is critical for legal contracts, medical data, or proprietary code.
  2. Cost: It's free. No monthly subscription, no API credits.
  3. Offline: Coding on a plane? No problem.

Getting Started with Ollama

The easiest way to start is Ollama.

  1. Download: Go to ollama.com and download the installer.
  2. Run: Open your terminal and type:
    ollama run llama3

  3. Chat: That's it. You're chatting with an 8-billion parameter model running entirely on your RAM.

The Trade-offs

Local models are powerful, but they eat battery and RAM. A standard 8GB laptop might struggle. We recommend at least 16GB of RAM (ideally unified memory on Apple Silicon) for a smooth experience.

The Future is Hybrid

We believe the future isn't "Cloud vs Local," but both. You'll use local models for quick, private tasks (drafting emails, summarizing docs) and cloud models (GPT-4) for heavy reasoning.
